Latest US election polls
The latest polls for the US presidential election show that Democratic candidate Kamala Harris has closed the gap with Donald Trump. Public opinion polls show that Kamala Harris has narrowed the gap between her and Donald Trump. When taken together, the seven national polls taken since Harris ran for president after Joe Biden dropped out of the race show that the Democrats have halved the gap. Some closely followed polls, including one by the Wall Street Journal on Friday, show Harris statistically tied with the former president. A New York Times/Siena poll on Thursday found that Harris has closed the gap by 6 or 7 points, depending on whether third parties are included. Harris’ gains come largely from parts of the Democratic coalition that have soured on Biden. A New York Times poll a month ago found that the 81-year-old president received only 59 percent of the votes of registered black voters, while Harris received 69 percent. Harris also increased her party’s share among Hispanic voters from 45 percent to 57 percent and among voters under 30 from 46 percent to 56 percent. A Wall Street Journal poll found similar shifts that explain the Democratic surge in enthusiasm. Less than a month ago, just 37 percent of Biden voters were enthusiastic about his candidacy, while now 81 percent of Harris voters say they are. The polling averages from RealClearPolitics and FiveThirtyEight can be slow to respond to the news, as new polls come in slowly and replace older ones in the sample. The unweighted average of polls taken after Biden dropped out of the race alone shows Harris trailing Trump by 1.6 points. Trump’s lead shrinks to about half that when a poll from Rasmussen Reports, which has consistently been the most Trump-leaning in RealClearPolitics’ sample, is excluded. Some of the polls in swing states show a similar trend. Polls from Emerson College in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin show Harris polling 3 to 4 percentage points higher than Biden in Emerson’s last poll a week ago.
