‘Constructive talks’ between US Treasury Secretary and Chinese Central Bank Governor
Following the meeting held the day before by the leaders of the world’s two largest economies, the US and China, this time, China’s Central Bank Governor Yi Gang and US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen came together within the scope of the G20 summit. Many topics ranging from commodity and energy prices to the macroeconomic outlook were discussed during the meeting. In a statement made by the US Treasury Department, it was stated that high and fluctuating energy and commodity prices were discussed during the meeting held at the G20 summit in Indonesia. An official who asked not to be named noted that the meeting lasted more than 2 hours and was held in a “constructive, open, positive tone.” The statement stated that the two discussed global challenges that were also discussed at the G20 meetings and that Yellen wanted to meet with China again in the future. In a statement to Bloomberg News after the meeting, Yi stated that they had a comprehensive and sincere meeting and that it was quite constructive. Prior to the meeting, officials stated that Yellen wanted to receive information about the country’s Covid-19 policy and the crisis in the real estate sector. The previous day, US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping met face to face in Bali for the first time since Biden took office. After the approximately three-hour meeting, the White House announced that Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi's meeting was "cordial" and that US Secretary of State Blinken would visit Beijing.
